What is an Anode?

Imagine an electrical device like a battery or a light bulb. An anode is the positively charged electrode within this device where electrons leave the system. It acts as the entry point for conventional current, allowing electricity to flow into the device.

Think of it this way:

  • Anode = Admission point for electrons
  • Cathode (the opposite electrode) = Collective point for electrons (electrons leave the device from the cathode)

Remembering Anode? A Helpful Mnemonic:

A handy memory trick to remember the function of an anode is the mnemonic ACID. It stands for Anode Current Into Device. This means the current enters the device through the anode.

  • Batteries: In a battery, the anode is the electrode where the oxidation reaction takes place, releasing electrons that flow through the circuit.
